Cultural Diversity in Ageing 2010 Victorian State Conference and Expo

‘Culturally Inclusive Quality Care at the End of Life'

12 October 2010, Rydges on Swanston Hotel, Carlton Victoria

The conference will explore ways in which services can better provide quality care at the end of life to the elderly people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It  will provide a platform for the promotion of culturally inclusive initiatives that enhance:

  • Aged care services
  • Palliative care services
  • Health services
  • Community based services
  • Pastoral care services
  • Allied health services

Keynote Speakers

Professor Megan-Jane Johnstone

Professor Johnstone is Academic Chair in Nursing and Associate Head of School (Research) in the School of Nursing at Deakin University.

Ms Tanja Bahro

Ms Bahro is the Manager of the Southern Metropolitan Palliative Care consortium.

Ms Christoula Nicolaou
Ms Nicolaou is a Greek/English Interpreter and an Advanced Translator. She is also a NAATI examiner.

Cultural Diversity in Ageing 2010 Victorian State Conference and Expo

The Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing invites submissions of abstracts for the 2010 Victorian State Conference and Expo to be held on the 12th October at Ridges on Swanston Hotel, Carlton Victoria.
 
The Conference is particularly looking for papers that relate to the conference theme of ‘Culturally Inclusive Quality Care at the End of Life’ with emphasis on one or more of the following categories:
 
  • Palliative care services
  • Advanced care planning
  • Service provision in community
  • Service provision in residential care
  • Effective communication
  • Role of culture and ethnicity
  • Spirituality and religion

ACSA National Community Care Conference- 'Next Generation- Rethinking, Reshaping, Rewarding'

2nd-4th June 2010, Gold Coast Convention Centre.

As community care service providers, carers, contractors, suppliers, researchers, decision makers and consumers it is up to each of us to prepare the way for a new generation of aged care.

Australian-Polish Community Services 'Building on Diversity' Conference

Wednesday 23rd June 2010, Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre, Preston

This one day conference aims to bring together ethno-specific and multicultural organisations, relevant government departments and other stakeholders to showcase positive practices, strategies and collaborations in the provision of culturally and linguistically responsive services.

The conference also aims to share practical tools, experiences and expertise that may help to enhance the development of other services, particularly for smaller and less resourced groups who are finding it difficult to meet the new and emerging needs of their communities.

Food with a Difference: Culturally Appropriate Meals in Aged Care Workshop

Friday 25th June 2010, The University of Melbourne- Hawthorn Campus

This seminar will explore the issue of providing culturally appropriate food in both the
community care and residential settings. It will cover:

- The role of food in promoting the wellbeing of CALD older people
- Traditional and religious observances around food
- Models for delivering culturally appropriate food
- Menus and other useful resources
- Practical workshop

Migrant Families in Aged Care: An Intergenerational Perspective Seminar

Aged care workers constantly negotiate all sorts of arrangements with families.  Often workers are dealing with a number of generations within the one family. Different generations have different views on the well-being of their elderly.

Cultural values impact directly on how perceptions can vary between family members. At this seminar we reviewed strategies to facilitate decision making and negotiation process in the aged care setting taking into consideration cultural and generational points of view and provide with best strategies in handling complaints from families from intergenerational point of view.

2009 Cultural Diversity in Ageing Victorian State Conference
The State Conference and Expo conducted by the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing on Monday 4th May at Hemisphere Conference Centre, Moorabbin proved an outstanding success with 217 conference participants from 3 states and the ACT, 25 presentations, 28 Expo exhibitors, much positive evaluation feedback and a range of encouraging state and national media coverage including Radio National and SBS.

New Resource 'Options in Aged Care' Launched in July 2008
A resource for health and aged care service providers and community workers to inform their clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds about available aged care services, Options in Aged Care provides an overview of all government-subsidised aged care services in 20 languages.
