Cultural Diversity in Aged Care Conference 2005

The Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing (formerly known as PICAC-Vic) held its inaugural Cultural Diversity in Aged Care Conference in June 2005. The aim of the conference was to highlight the aged care needs of ethnic communities and best practice in the provision of culturally appropriate aged care.

Attended by over 200 people from across Australia, the high level of interest indicated the eagerness to address the needs of the increasing number of older Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Although planned as a state conference, delegates came from South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, as well as regional Victoria. Attendees included community representatives, aged care service providers and senior federal government representatives.

Conference speakers included lawyer and former Victorian Equal Opportunity Commissioner Michael Gorton AM, who spoke about risk management and cultural diversity, and Head of Nursing and Midwifery at RMIT University, Professor Olga Kanitsaki AM, who spoke about the impact of culture on aged care service delivery.

Other keynote speakers included: Fay Carter, Manager of Aboriginal Community Elders Service; Phong Nguyen, Chairperson Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria; Wendy Bateman, Acting State Manager Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency; and Monash University Research Fellow Dr Susannah Runci, who spoke about language use in residential aged care facilities.

During the afternoon concurrent sessions, residential and community care service providers highlighted best practice in the provision of culturally appropriate aged care.
