Truth Telling Yarn for the Aged Care Sector

We recently facilitated a Truth Telling Yarn for the Aged Care Sector and Healing History Walk in partnership with Initiatives of Change Australia and the Aboriginal Advancement League.

Participants included representatives from the aged care sector in Victoria and the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Victoria/ Tasmania State Office.

Key takeaways:

*We learned about the visionary founders of the Aboriginal Advancement League and their ongoing struggle for social justice.
*We heard from Initiatives of Change about their work in building trust with Indigenous communities through their Turruk program.
*The importance of co-designing aged care facilities with Indigenous community members.
*We talked about Reconciliation Action Plans and what each organisation can do to promote reconciliation; and
*We briefly discussed the current aged care regulatory and policy environment and its implications for culturally safe care.

We aim to organise a follow-up event in the next financial year focusing on culturally safe aged care in the context of the aged care reform initiatives and best practices in culturally safe care. Stay tuned!

A big thank you to Sarah Naarden and Leigh Saunders for delivering the session.
