PICAC Alliance Media Release: Call for the 2026-27 federal budget to announce continuation of the Commonwealth Home Support Program

12 May 2026 / News

Ahead of the 2026-2027 federal budget release next week, the Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care (PICAC) Alliance has released a media statement to reiterate its call for the budget to announce a continuation of the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) for older Australians.

More specifically, the Alliance calls for the maintenance of the Commonwealth Home Support Program especially for smaller providers, such as ethno-specific and multicultural organisations, who are providing Social Support Groups and transport services. These CHSP funded services perform a vital role in wellbeing and social inclusion to help older people maintain connection to language, community and culture.

The media release reiterated the priorities of the PICAC Alliance’s 2026-2027 federal budget submission to Treasury’s consultation process in January. The submission also called for increased funding for:

  • Support At Home packages to offset the time needed to communicate with older individuals and their support person, families or primary carers through an interpreter,
    • delivery of cultural safety training to the half million aged care workers in Australia,
    • research into smarter care such as digital technologies for interpreting and translation in aged care.
